Own This 98-Acre Estate For Less Than A Vancouver Teardown
Blois, France
If you’ve seen the hit ITV period drama Downton Abbey then you’ve likely imagined yourself living out life just as the Crawley’s do on their sprawling private estate. Now you can – especially if you’ve played your real estate cards right in Vancouver’s red hot market. The time has come to unload your dated overly inflated Vancouver home and cash it in for something a little more gracious & appropriate to the value. Take this dated 50′s home in Vancouver’s ritzy Shaughnessy district. The listing claims it’s one of very few homes in First Shaughnessy that can be demolished, which well quite frankly increases the value quite a bit. The 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom home sits on a 0.33-acre lot which allows up to 6,400 square feet of new construction, and the listing says architectural plans by Loy Leyland are underway. It’s listed at $8,680,000 CAD / €6 134 953 EUR. Ridiculous right? Now let’s see what kind of ‘Downton Abbey’ you can secure as your new family estate elsewhere in the world. For $7,781,639 CAD / €5 000 000 EUR in Blois, France you can be the proud new owner of a fabulous 17th-Century dream compound consisting of countless buildings on a private 98-acre estate. There is about 13,455 square feet of living space which has been fully restored over the last three years. One of the estates most beautiful features are the formal gardens dating back to 1755. The gardens were carried out by Morel, a landscape architect, on the plans of Le Nôtre.
Also on the property is the former caretaker’s lodge, a chapel, large garages, a woodshed, stables with tack room, a barn and several other buildings. The entire estate is closed by walls or fences giving you the utmost privacy – something you expect when it comes to an estate of this quality. Having seen what you can buy for similar cost to a teardown in Vancouver, BC are you ready to pack your bags and live your life like the Crowleys? Comparing dollar to dollar this impressive 98-acre ‘Downton Abby-esque’ estate is listed $898,361 CAD / €634 954 less than the dated teardown in Vancouver, BC. The choice is yours. Live like the Earl of Grantham on your private 98-acre estate for $7,781,639 CAD / €5 000 000 EUR or be the proud new owner of a teardown in Vancouver’s ritzy Shaughnessy district for $8,680,000 CAD / €6 134 953 EUR? It’s a no brainer for me. It’s listed with Le Nail Real Estate International.

In most areas across Canada and even the United States a nest egg of over $2,000,000 could potentially buy or be enough to fund the construction of your dream home. We know that’s not the case in Vancouver, B.C., a city where $2,000,000 will buy you a 1,500 square foot tear down or a shoebox condo, but what about Vancouver’s neighbour Richmond? Located just a half hour from Vancouver is Richmond – a place where 190,000 people call home. We scoured the MLS to get a glimpse of what kinds of properties are available for purchase and what we found wasn’t pretty. The best way describe the real estate in Richmond, B.C. is with this quote, “Little boxes made of ticky tacky, little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same. There’s a green one and a pink one, and a blue one and a yellow one. And they’re all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.” With that being said scroll down and see 25 of the most unoriginal multi-million dollar homes you’ve ever seen.

Michael Bublé reportedly building dream home near Vancouver
Government Road, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Global News has sounded the alarm that Michael Bublé could be the mystery owner of a 2.3-acre piece of property in Burnaby, BC which is currently in the process of being rezoned. The property has been cleared and an application has been submitted to the city, which if approved would include a nearly 30,000 square foot residence complete with outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, and an indoor 7,700 square foot NHL-style hockey rink. You heard right, a hockey rink, which aren’t as uncommon as you might think. Earlier this year we showcased 14 homes with private hockey rinks. Global News noted that Bublé grew up in the neighbourhood and that the property is located across the street from his former elementary school. Neither Bublé or the City of Burnaby have released statements regarding the rumours.
6712 Adera Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V6P 5C1
The careless disposal of a 120-year old tree in a wealthy residential area of Vancouver known for large trees has caused a backlash from neighbours. Global News reported that the large tree which sat in the front yard of a 1930s Cape Cod style home, which is currently on the market for $5.688-million, was removed leaving nothing else but an eyesore of a stump and several questions.
A bylaw dating back to 1996 had originally allowed owners of property to remove one healthy tree per year regardless of the reason, however Global reported that as of this April the City of Vancouver passed a new bylaw requiring homeowner’s to get a permit before removing any trees and that they must be diseased, dying, or hazardous in some way. The home which will likely be torn down for new construction offers over 3,400 square feet with 3 bedrooms & 3 bathrooms on a 0.30-acre lot. The agent of the listing told Global that a permit was approved and that an arborist deemed the tree dangerous.
While it hasn’t been released as to why it was deemed dangerous, one resident told Global, “I would think if there was an arborist report, there would be something here indicating why it was taken down.” It leaves one to wonder if it were removed for the sole reason of this being an investment property, and to maximum the useable building area of the lot which would increase its value.

Vancouver’s Historic Gabriola Mansion lists for $10-Million
1523 Davie Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V6G 3A2
One of Vancouver’s oldest and most beautiful mansions has come on the market with a list price of $10-million CAD. The 114-year old, 17,327 square foot mansion sits on a large 0.60-acre estate with 198′ of frontage along Davie Street & 131′ of frontage along Nicola Street. It was built in 1900 for Benjamin T. Rogers, the founder of Rogers Sugar, and was designed by famed New Westminster architect Samuel Maclure. The estate originally spanned an entire City block and included stables, greenhouses, and several outbuildings.
Janet Leduc of Heritage Vancouver told News 1130 in April 2013, “It was described as probably the most lavish private home ever constructed in British Columbia. The stonework comes from Gabriola Island and the stained glass was designed by James Blomfield. It’s pretty special and important as far as we’re concerned.” The listing notes that in 1979 the building was completely renovated including restorations, the installation of modern sprinklers, new heating & air conditioning systems and other work to meet City requirements.
The mansion has also housed a handful of restaurants including Hy’s Mansion and Romano’s Macaroni Grill however it has remained vacant since 2008. Some of the features of the home include an elaborate terra cotta fireplace in the main hall carved by master carver John Bruce (known for creating the stone lions guarding the Vancouver Court House) and woodcarvings in the billiard room by Edward Baston. The slate roof was also replaced in 1999 with Canadian sourced slate.
Not surprisingly, the listing neglected to mention the mansion’s storied ghostly past. Locals believe the mansion is haunted by one of the Rogers’ sons who is rumoured to have committed suicide by jumping out of a second storey window. There have been several reports of sightings while the home was occupied by Hy’s Mansion & Romano’s Macaroni Grill.
Ghosts of Vancouver shared this sighting, “A restaurant manager saw an apparition of a man clearly one day, standing at the top of the grand staircase, looking down at him with a blank expression. When the manager began ascending the stairs to investigate, the man vanished.” Ghosts of Vancouver also claims there is an underground tunnel that once connected the mansion to a nearby club, the tunnel was used for bootlegging and prostitution running during Vancouver’s prohibition era. Ghosts or no ghosts this is still a very special property. For more information on this unique offering please contact CBRE.

The $5-Million Dollar Move-In Ready Tear Down in Vancouver, BC
4537 Marguerite Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V6J 4G7
By now it should come as no surprise that the City of Vancouver doesn’t care much about the preservation of their architectural history. It seems every day there is a new heritage home awaiting demolition to make way for new modern boxes. Earlier this month Global BC reported that a 120-year old tree was removed from the front yard of a 1930s Cape Cod – which not surprisingly will likely be torn down.
This one however was quite shocking. I first browsed the listing photos without glancing at the description. I saw a stunning, extremely well-kept heritage home that looked to be a fantastic place to entertain friends and family. It was built in 1924, offers over 4,000 square feet, and has been lovingly cared for by the current owners for over 28 years. What more could you want? The agent marketing the $4,980,000 CAD home has other plans. In big bold letters about three quarters through the description it reads, “HOUSE CAN BE DEMOLISHED.” Not only is it shocking, but it’s disgusting to think that somebody would purchase this as a tear down.
The home is filled with original charm such as the inlay hardwood floors, extensive mouldings, and grand fireplaces – all of which will likely end up in the landfill. Shame on you Vancouver. It’s a long shot but I hope somebody, with the funds required, can see the beauty & architectural beauty of this 1920s family home.
$5,057,550 USD / 1050 Laurier Avenue, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
11 Dream Homes Cheaper Than This Vancouver Teardown
In 2012 it could have been yours for just $1,581,143 USD / $1,838,000 CAD. Overpriced? You bet, but nowhere close to how overpriced it currently is. The property saw a rise in price in early 2013 when it was listed at $3,439,287 USD / $3,998,000 CAD. Fast forward to today and you’ll have to shell out $5,057,550 USD / $5,888,000 CAD to get your name on the title of this dilapidated property. With the price going wildly up so did the taxes. In 2007 taxes on this, then very livable home, were $5,923 CAD annually. Taxes for 2014 were $14,766 CAD. Only in Vancouver do homeowners think they can get away with a 220.35% increase in value in just two years. Depressing as it is this is the real estate market in Vancouver. Unhappy with what we’re dealing with here in Vancouver we’ve decided to once again show you several dream properties from around the world each with a list price less than this gem in Vancouver.
